Dulwich Village has no switch-on ceremony. The one tree lighting is West Dulwich's, on Park Hall Road, and the Village's festive day is the traders' Christmas Stocking.
If you are searching for a Dulwich Christmas lights switch-on, the honest answer is that Dulwich Village does not hold one. The Dulwich Estate puts the trees and lights up along the high street without a ceremony, and the Village’s festive day is a separate event held later, on a Sunday in December.
The nearest thing to a switch-on in the Dulwich area is West Dulwich’s, and the borough’s is at Elephant and Castle. Here is what is on the record for each, and what has not been announced yet.
Nothing for the 2026 season has been published as of 5 September 2026. That is normal: these dates land from late October onwards. This page will be updated when they do.
West Dulwich: a tree lighting at 3.30pm
Love West Dulwich, a group of local businesses and residents, runs an annual Christmas fair along Rosendale Road, Croxted Road and Park Hall Road, and it includes an actual tree lighting.
From The Dulwich Estate’s account of the 2023 fair, held on Saturday 25 November:
- Food and drink stalls in the car park on Croxted Road
- A Best Dressed Dog show at noon
- The Jingle Bells Show near Wigwam in Rosendale Road at 2pm
- The lighting of the Christmas tree on the corner of Park Hall Road and Croxted Road at 3.30pm
- Storytime at Dulwich Books at 11am
The earlier pattern is the same shape. The Estate’s write-up of the 2018 fair puts it on Saturday 24 November, 11am to 4pm, with craft stalls on the same three roads, a treasure trail, live music and a Santa’s grotto at the Wigwam toy shop at £4 entry including a small present.
So: a late November Saturday, tree lit mid-afternoon. The group posts as @lovewestdulwich.
Dulwich Village: Christmas Stocking, not a switch-on
The Village event is Christmas Stocking, hosted by the Dulwich Village independent traders with the Estate and Southwark Council. The Estate’s own description of the 2024 edition is the clearest: it ran 11am to 5pm on Sunday 8 December in Dulwich Square and throughout the Village, and “the Estate has decorated the high street with Christmas trees and lights” already, in advance. No countdown, no switch.
The published dates run:
- 2018: Sunday 2 December, 11am to 5pm
- 2022: Saturday 10 December, 10am to 5pm
- 2023: Sunday 3 December, 11am to 5pm
- 2024: Sunday 8 December, 11am to 5pm
The 2024 programme gives a fair idea of what to expect: festive music from local schools in Dulwich Square from 11am, a children’s disco at St Barnabas Parish Hall from 2pm, Popchoir at 2pm, a Christmas market at the Crown and Greyhound from midday to 4pm, food and drink tasters, free face painting, and the Mystery Stocking Trail, where children collect an entry card from any shop and post it in Romeo Jones to win a prize.
Updates go out on @thisisdulwichvillage on Instagram, and The Dulwich Estate posts them on its What’s Happening page. As of 5 September 2026 that page’s most recent items are from 16 July and none of them are festive.
Elephant and Castle: the borough’s switch-on
Castle Square, at 40 Elephant Road, SE17 1EU, holds the switch-on that most resembles a town centre one. Southwark’s events listing for it gives Friday 29 November 2024, 3.30pm to 7.30pm, with live brass band music, carols, food and special guests.
Castle Square’s own account of an earlier year fills in the shape of the day: 1pm to 6pm, free Christmas card making and bauble decorating workshops, a Santa’s grotto with a post box, carols from the Elephant and Castle Community Hub Choir, and the Mayor of Southwark switching on the giant tree and the square’s lights at 5.15pm. That page is undated by year and gives “Saturday 26th November”, which was a Saturday in 2022, so read it as background rather than as this year’s plan.
A warning about Southwark’s own listings
Southwark Council’s Southwark Presents calendar is where these events surface, but almost every festive entry on it carries a line reading “This is a publicly contributed event and not a council event”, and several are years out of date. The Castle Square page still shows 2024. The Festive Flea Christmas Markets page still shows 6 to 21 December 2025. Check the organiser before you travel.
The Christmas market at the Picture Gallery
The most reliable Christmas market in Dulwich is So Last Century’s Christmas Vintage Market at Dulwich Picture Gallery. In 2025 it ran Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December, 10am to 5pm, with 20 vintage traders in the Linbury Room, Art Studio and Cloisters, more stalls plus wreaths and crêpes in the gardens, and free ticketed entry. There is step-free access throughout. Dogs are not allowed inside.
Its 2026 dates are not out. The organiser’s Next Events calendar currently runs to a Catford fair on 24 and 25 October 2026, with no Dulwich Christmas date listed yet.
