Peckham Rye shuts on Friday night, then southbound until 29 October. The 343, N343 and 484 skip their Nunhead stops one way; here is which stops and when.

Buses on the 343, N343 and 484 will skip their stops between Peckham Rye and Nunhead for almost three weeks while the road around the common is resurfaced.

Transport for London posted the diversions on its bus status service this week. They start on Friday night and run, in one direction, until 4.30pm on Thursday 29 October. No other route through the area shows a change for these works.

What is closing

Southwark Council made the traffic order on 1 October. The notice says the work is highway works by FM Conway, in three phases:

When Where What
Friday 9 October Peckham Rye, between East Dulwich Road and Homestall Road Closed
10 to 29 October The same stretch Southbound carriageway closed
Nights of 30 October, then 2 to 13 November, 8pm to 5am Peckham Rye, between Nunhead Lane and Cheltenham Road Closed

Access to homes and businesses is exempted “so far as it is practical”. The order does not name a road diversion. Its references are TTRO00435 and TTRO00452.

TfL describes the work as carriageway resurfacing. Its bus notices treat the Friday closure as an overnight job, from 8pm on Friday 9 October to 5am on Saturday 10 October. The council’s order gives the date but no hours.

Which buses are affected

Friday night, both directions

From 8pm on Friday to 5am on Saturday, TfL says:

  • 343 and N343: diverted both ways via Peckham Rye, Forest Hill Road, Honor Oak Park, Stondon Park, Brockley Road, Shardeloes Road and Vesta Road. Stops between Nigel Road and Kitto Road are missed.
  • 484: diverted both ways via Peckham Rye, Forest Hill Road and Brenchley Gardens. Stops between Peckham Rye Common / Nunhead Lane and Merttins Road / Inverton Road are missed.

TfL adds that the diversion is “subject to change”.

From 7.30am on Saturday 10 October to 4.30pm on Thursday 29 October:

  • 343 and N343 towards New Cross Gate: the same diversion via Forest Hill Road, Honor Oak Park and Brockley. Stops from Peckham Rye / Nunhead Lane (EC) to Kitto Road are missed.
  • 484 towards Lewisham: via Peckham Rye, Forest Hill Road and Brenchley Gardens. Stops from Peckham Rye Common (ED) to Merttins Road are missed.

Buses in the other direction, towards Peckham and Camberwell, are not listed as diverted.

The November nights

The third phase closes Peckham Rye between Nunhead Lane and Cheltenham Road overnight. TfL had posted no bus changes for those nights when we checked on Thursday morning. We will add them to our Dulwich roadworks page when they appear.

Nunhead is already short of buses

This lands on top of two other diversions in the same corner of SE15.

Emergency works on Nunhead Lane, logged by TfL on 23 September, are into their third week. TfL’s status this morning still shows:

  • 78: starting and finishing at Nigel Road (stops EA and WM), not serving the rest of the route to and from St Mary’s Road
  • P12: diverted both ways, missing the stops from Carden Road to Bellwood Road or Inverton Road

TfL gives no end date for either.

Separately, the P13 has been diverted both ways since Wednesday for emergency Thames Water works on Underhill Road in East Dulwich. It misses the stops from Whateley Road to Belvoir Road towards Streatham, and from Underhill Road / Melford Road to Whateley Road towards New Cross.

What it means for you

  • If you catch the 343 or 484 home from Peckham towards Nunhead, Brockley or Lewisham, your usual stops on that stretch will not be served from Saturday until 29 October. Check TfL’s status page for the stop nearest you before you travel.
  • If you are heading into Peckham, the 343 and 484 run as normal in that direction, according to TfL’s notices.
  • If you drive, expect the southbound side of Peckham Rye to be shut between East Dulwich Road and Homestall Road for three weeks, with no signed diversion named in the council’s order.
  • Later in the month, the 42, 78 and 343 are also affected overnight from 13 to 17 October while Tower Bridge closes from 10pm to 5.30am. TfL says the 78 and 42 divert via London Bridge, and the 343 is cut short at Unicorn Theatre.
