About

The Tankard at 178 Walworth Road, SE17 1JL, reopened under new management in September 2026, open 11am to 11pm and to midnight on Friday and Saturday. The number is (020) 7703 4006. It is a mock Tudor single-room corner pub with a wood-panelled interior, a side garden with picnic tables, Sky Sports, darts and wi-fi, about 350 metres from Elephant and Castle station. The handpumps have been taken out, so there is no cask ale; those details come from the CAMRA branch survey last updated on 4 September 2026. Do not confuse it with the other Tankard a mile away at 111 Kennington Road, SE11 6SF, which is a separate pub with its own hygiene rating. The Walworth Road pub is licensed again after a gap. Its previous premises licence, number 871761, was surrendered in error by the earlier operator on 6 December 2023 and could not be reinstated after the 28-day qualifying period, so Walworth Arms Limited applied for a fresh one on 28 March 2024, heard by Southwark's licensing sub-committee on 21 May 2024 with Sinead Hylton as the proposed designated premises supervisor. During consultation the hours were pulled back to the council's recommended closing times, 11am to midnight Thursday to Saturday and 11am to 11pm Sunday to Wednesday, with licensable activities stopping 30 minutes before the terminal hour. Southwark's report records the site as a public house since 1860. Its food hygiene rating is a 4, good, from an inspection on 30 January 2020, the oldest of the ratings on this parade: 0 points for hygiene, 10 for structure and 5 for confidence in management. Points run the opposite way to the rating, so the lower the score the better. That inspection predates the current management, and the Food Standards Agency register at ratings.food.gov.uk, FHRS ID 363499, is where a new result would appear.
